Library board rejects public stance on firearms warrant article

Public Library Board of Trustees · Meeting of April 14, 2026

Sandwich Public Library Board rejects public guidance on firearms in public buildings. The board voted 6-2 not to make a public recommendation on a warrant article allowing concealed carry in non-school public buildings. Chair Kathleen McDermott, Vice Chair Gretchen Mulroy, Jayne Burke, Jeanie Vander Pyl, Evie Dewar, and Lynne Waterman supported declining to take a public position, while Bob Thomson and Mark Wiklund opposed, arguing the board should advise town meeting that firearms would undermine the library's safe, welcoming mission.

The board approved amended March minutes and reviewed draft bylaw revisions.
