Sandwich Opens Cooling Center at CAL on July 2 and 3 Amid Heat Forecast
The town of Sandwich is opening the Center for Active Living as a cooling center this week and wrapping up a busy stretch of road work, even as America 250 celebrations carry the community toward the Fourth of July.

High temperatures and elevated heat index values are forecast for the days ahead, and the town is responding. The Sandwich Center for Active Living (CAL) will serve as a cooling center on July 2 and July 3, giving residents a place to escape the heat. The CAL is located on Route 130; residents are encouraged to check sandwichmass.org for hours and any updates.
On the roads, drainage construction is scheduled on June 30 and July 1 at the roadway near 57 Kiahs Way. That section will be closed during work hours, though full access will be restored at the end of each day. Separately, resurfacing of Christopher Hollow Road and nearby streets is set to begin July 8, with work hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Residents along those corridors should expect periodic access delays.
Today is also the last day for Transfer Station permits: current 2025–2026 permits expire June 30, and residents who haven't yet renewed should do so now to avoid a gap in access. Renewed permits run July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, and are available through the town's online services portal.

Sandwich is in the middle of its week-long America 250 celebration, commemorating the nation's 250th anniversary with family-friendly programming running June 27 through July 4. On Wednesday, July 1, the Sandwich Town Band and guest performers take the stage as part of the festivities. On Thursday, July 2, the Sandwich Town Archives presents "Caught Up in the Conflict" with Rebecca Holberton — a program that connects the community to its own history within a national story. The week closes out July 4 with the Sandwich 5K Road Race, the annual Fourth of July Parade, and a Picnic in the Park featuring the Famous Egg Toss.
Looking a bit further out, the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce will host the inaugural Mill Creek Rubber Ducky Derby on July 24.
