Sandwich marks Pedestrian Safety Month with visibility tips
The Town of Sandwich and its Bikeways & Pedestrian Committee are promoting visibility tips for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers as part of October's Pedestrian Safety Month, and free reflective gear and bike lights will be available at Sunday's Trunk or Treat event at Heritage Museums & Gardens.
The Town of Sandwich announced Oct. 23 that it is highlighting pedestrian safety as part of October's Pedestrian Safety Month campaign, run in coordination with the Sandwich Bikeways & Pedestrian Committee. The town says visibility becomes increasingly important as days grow shorter and Halloween approaches.
The announcement offers safety tips for different road users. Pedestrians are advised to wear bright or reflective clothing after dark, use sidewalks and marked crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Cyclists are urged to use a white front light and red rear light, wear reflective gear, and follow the rules of the road, including signaling turns.
Drivers are asked to slow down in neighborhoods and near crosswalks, keep headlights on, stay alert for pedestrians and cyclists especially at dusk, avoid distractions and watch for children during Halloween activities.
The Sandwich Recreation Department will have a trunk at the Sandwich Police Department's Trunk or Treat event this Sunday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon at Heritage Museums & Gardens. Free safety gear will be available there, including reflective bracelets for pedestrians and bike lights distributed through MassBike's Light Brigade campaign. Tip cards with Halloween safety reminders for pedestrians and drivers will also be handed out.
The town's campaign slogan is "Stay Focused. Stay Safe. Slow Down, In Our Town."
