Sandwich School Committee votes 6-1 to split $31,000 in old student funds equally

SANDWICH — April 9, 2025 — Sandwich School Committee splits $31,000 in decades-old student activity funds equally among six classes. The committee voted 6-1 at its April 9 meeting to distribute $31,087.05 in accumulated balances from defunct class accounts — the oldest dating to the class of 1998 — equally among the current grades seven through twelve, with each class receiving approximately $5,181. Superintendent Joe Mattos had proposed a weighted formula giving high school classes larger shares, but a member moved equal division, noting that seniors face imminent prom and senior week costs. The committee also approved three FY25 budget transfers 7-0, including $15,000 for Oak Ridge Elementary spring club stipends, a move that prompted calls to review the district's 15-year-old $150 athletic participation fee before the end of the fiscal year. Mattos reported that Oak Ridge Principal Trish Hill has been hired as Mashpee's assistant superintendent and that Human Resources and Assistant Finance Director Monica de la Hoya will become Mashpee's business manager, with searches for both positions now open on SchoolSpring.
